Nearly New Uniform Sale

On Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd May at 3:15pm our stall will be in the playground with PE kit items priced at just 50p, Marpool school uniform priced at 75p for polo tops, skirts, trousers and dresses, £1 for sweatshirts and cardigans and £2 for coats.
If you have any good quality outgrown school uniform that we could sell on the stall please bring it to the school reception asap. Thank you.

THANK YOU

A big thank you to everyone who supported all of our fund-raising events last term. Our Mothers Day Raffle, Biscuit Days and Easter Raffle raised £114.00, £176.85 and £122.20 respectively.

OLYMPIC PICNIC

We hope that lots of the Foundation and Key Stage 1 children will be joining us at school this Saturday 12th May for our annual Picnic. There will be lots of fun and games plus refreshments and a raffle. To help with the planning please return your confirmation slips with £1 to the school office as soon as possible.

Picnic Parking The staff car park will be available to people attending the picnic as although the parking restrictions in Moorfield Road do not apply on a Saturday we would prefer it if people did not park on the yellow line.

MSA/SCHOOL SUMMER DRAW TICKETS

Soon we will be distributing books of draw tickets for you to sell to help raise funds for school projects. The Christmas and summer draws are major fund-raisers and without the funds generated by them we would not be able to offer some of the learning opportunities enjoyed by your child. We hope that you are able to sell draw tickets for us and ensure continuing improvements to the school facilities that MSA funds permit. Please support us if you can.

You can be a competitor or a supporter to join us for lots of fun and games at this year’s MSA Olympic Picnic, for pupils in Foundation and Key Stage 1, which will take place in the school grounds (hall if wet).

There will be prizes for the best costumes. ( Please make sure you can run about in your outfit– games may involve climbing!)
Refreshments and a raffle will be available.

Siblings are welcome to attend the picnic but entertainment will be provided for Foundation and Key Stage 1 pupils only.

If you would like to come to the Olympic Picnic, please bring a packed lunch and an adult plus £1.

I.M.P.A.C.T. (in Marpool children and parents together) Request

I.M.P.A.C.T committee would like to find out if anyone can donate an item or items for us to auction to the highest bidder. It can be anything from a voucher to a signed t-shirt and from a brooch to a diamond necklace, plus if you know anyone famous or someone who works for someone famous, could they donate tickets for concerts or signed pictures, even a day out with them. Remember, this money all goes towards MAKE A WISH AT MARPOOL which is a new foundation that impact have made which is all about Marpool making a wish that charities like the Exeter hospice care and other good causes alike, can get support and help the children that are a lot less fortunate than us live a better life. Budo Club News

Budo Taijutsu (Ninjutsu) Instructor Simon Tully, who runs the Budo club for Marpool students on Mondays after school, is now offering an adult class from 7.30pm to 9.00pm on Monday nights here at Marpool in the hall. Parents Coffee Morning

The next coffee morning will be on Tuesday 1st May 2012. Everyone is welcome to come and haveadrinkandachatinarelaxed,informalenvironment. We will be joined by an additional guest who will be talking about potential groups that could be opening up in the area for parents with children with additional needs.

Cake/Biscuit Day

On Tuesday 1st and Tuesday 8th May, there will be a cake/biscuit sale at morning break to raise funds for the year 3/4 trip to @Bristol Science Museum – Yummy! and only 20p per cake.

New Ducks

We have 5 new Aylesbury ducks living with our hens and bantams. Thank you to Mr Locke who has donated the ducks, coop and feed to the school. They are settling in well and have already laid some eggs.

Exmouth Tag Rugby Champions!

On Wednesday 28th March, two teams from Marpool competed in the Exmouth Schools tag rugby tournament. When we got to Exmouth Rugby Club the A team, in the competitive tournament, and B team, in the friendly tournament, started their battles.
The B team won 4 out of their 5 matches, they made a brilliant effort, but there was no extra round to play in. A young team with year 3’s up to year 6 made a good impression. Charlie R, playing for Marpool for the first time, said “We had lots of fun and I felt nervous and excited to represent Marpool!”
The A team had a dodgy start losing their first game but recovered to come second in their group. They then qualified for the semi finals against Woodbury, when a late try by Tom C put us into the final. In the final we played brilliantly and beat Withycombe 11–8 to win the trophy.
Tyler C, one of Marpool’s heroes said “We had a good time playing, we went there to win but also have fun! I felt really proud of our team!”
We now represent the Exmouth Schools in the East Devon regional tournament on Tuesday. Fingers Crossed!

Girls Football

Over the last four Thursday’s our fantastic Yr 5/6 girls football squad have been representing Marpool down at the Comp. 25 girls have represented our 3 teams and have played amazing football with huge success!
Good Luck for the Girls tournament which will take place on Wednesday 2nd May 2012.

Goodbye Miss Burns

Miss Burns, who has been working in Year 5/6 this term, has sadly come to the end of her teaching placement with us. We wish her good luck in her future teaching career.

Bonsai Base – Overnight stay

We had an exciting overnight stay at school last Thursday! The children all planned and cooked their own meals, played lots of games like night time hide and seek in the dark school and then slept in the hall. The children were all fantastic and had a great time!
A special thank you to Mrs Sharkey and Miss Burns for their help with this
successful evening.

New Build

Marpool are set to increase the number of pupils to 60 joining us each year starting with the F2 (reception) children in September. This is really exciting for the school and our community. As you will have read in the papers, we are having some new classrooms built. Building work is likely to start the week before the half term. Plans are available to view outside Mrs Pattison’s office, and the planning notices are available to view outside the school.

APPOINTMENTS

We have been busy interviewing staff to join us in our teaching team at Marpool pending the new classroom and building, all set to be in full action by September. We are pleased with our appointments and look forward to welcoming our new staff. I will introduce you to new faces and give more details nearer the time.

Chickens…

Our 26 chickens have settled in very well in their new enclosure and are living the life of luxury. Our amazing team of animal rangers are doing a superb job caring for all of our pets. Thank you!!!
If any adult feels that they could help with putting them to bed some evenings as it gets dark, please see Mr Tomlin.
Eggs for Sale
We also have around 12 eggs a day being laid by our hens; these are now available to be purchased after school on the playground – £1.00 for 6.

Sports Relief

Well done to everyone for the Sport Relief Relay on Friday, we raised over £200! Look out for some pictures in the papers.

OLYMPICS…

With this year being the London Olympics we as a school wish to celebrate this through our Sports Day, we are very proud to say we have secured the Exeter Arena on 2nd July 2012 for the day and we intend to hold a Sports Day at the Arena, this will be from F2 upwards. The F1 children (part time) will be joining the rest of the Learning Community for a Mini Olympics on the 13th July. To help us plan transport we would really like parents where possible to taketheirchildrentoExeterandbackandjoinusfortheday. When we return after the Easter break we will collect this information from you, we can of course have 10 coaches, but this will have a significant impact on the school budget, especially when we are encouraging parents to come. More information will follow but please book the date in your diary. It will be a fantastic day for all.

Holiday requests will only be authorized in exceptional circumstances. Attendance must be at 95% or above and affordability is not an acceptable reason.

Bassetts Farm Primary School need a new caretaker. If anyone is interested, please call Bassetts or details can be found on the Devon County council website.

Please can everyone be considerate to the community when parking outside the school. Cars should not be left across peoples drives.

EASTER RAFFLE Friday 30th March

The draw for our Easter Raffle will take place on Friday 30th March at 2.30pm. Tickets costing just 20p each will be on sale in the playground at 3.15 p.m. from Wednesday 21st March until Thursday 29th March plus at 8.40 a.m. on Wednesday 28th , Thursday 29th and Friday 30th March. We would be very grateful if you could donate a prize for this raffle. Please leave it in the reception. If sufficient prizes are donated it will mean that every ticket sold is profit for the M.S.A. funds. Thank you.

NEARLY NEW UNIFORM STALL Monday 26th & Tuesday 27th March

The MSA will be running a stall in the playground on Monday 26th and Tuesday 27th March at 3.15 p.m. We will be selling nearly new Marpool school uniform priced at 50p for PE items, 75p for polo tops, skirts, trousers and dresses, £1 for sweatshirts and cardigans and £2 for coats. We also have some Community College uniform for sale. If you have any good quality outgrown school uniform that we could sell on the stall please bring it to the school reception.

BISCUIT DAYS Thursday 29th March and Friday 30th March.

These biscuit days are always very popular with the children. Biscuits will be sold in the playground during morning break for 15p each, a maximum of 5 per child per day. There are some recipes overleaf for you to bake your own or alternatively why not ice and decorate some rich tea or digestive biscuits? Please bring them to school in named containers, these containers can than be returned to you. There are 350 children at Marpool and last year we sold 1028 biscuits but could have sold more, so your contributions of biscuits are needed and much appreciated.

INFANT PICNIC

A reminder to our Foundation and Key Stage 1 pupils that this year’s picnic will be on Saturday 12th May with an Olympic theme. More details after the Easter holiday.

PLAIN BISCUITS (makes approx. 30)

225g/8oz self-raising flour, Pinch of salt, 125g/5oz butter, Beaten egg to mix, 100g/4oz castor sugar

1. Sift flour and salt into bowl.
2. Rub in butter finely.
3. Add sugar.
4. Mix to very stiff dough with beaten egg.
5. Turn out onto lightly floured board. Kneed gently until smooth.
6. Put into a polythene bag or wrap in foil. Chill for 30 minutes.
7. Roll out thinly. Cut into about 30 rounds with 4cm/2 inch cutter.
8. Transfer to buttered baking trays. Prick biscuits well with fork.
9. Bake in centre of oven 180 C/350 F/Gas No 4 for 12 to 15 minutes until pale gold.
10. Leave on trays for 2 or 3 minutes. Transfer to wire cooling rack.
11. Decorate with icing when completely cold.

For Currant Biscuits add 50g/2oz currants with sugar.

Cherry Biscuits add 50g/2oz finely chopped glace cherries with sugar.

Coconut Biscuits add 50g/2oz desiccated coconut with sugar & half
teaspoon vanilla essence with egg.

Chocolate Flake add 50g/2oz grated chocolate with sugar.

Forest School Lunchtime Club

We have a wonderful outdoor learning space and would like small groups of children to be able to use it over the lunchtime.

We need your help!

If you could spare us 1/2 an hour on a regular basis at lunchtime we would offer the children a chance to work andplayunderyourguidanceinthegrounds. Youcould choose an activity to supervise or we could give you one – activities could include art work, litter picking, bird watching, treasure hunts, weeding, goat walking, poem writing – the list could be endless.

Mrs Edlin has decided to step down from her responsibility of class teacher as she has chosen to re- address the balance of family and work life. She will be popping in and out of school and has a special project which she is aiming to complete this summer term. We wish her all the very best and will miss her bubbly and infectious personality.

Queens Jubilee Celebrations in Exmouth – a date for the diary

Exmouth Town Council has invited all children and their families to Exmouth’s Jubilee street party extravaganza in the Strand Gardens on Monday 4th June from 11.00am – 6.00 pm.
There will be a Mad Hatter’s tea party, a bandstand housing traditional jazz, comedy, brass bands and tea dances, street performers, tugs of war, Punch and Judy shows, face painting, circus skills and much more.
Children are invited to dress as an Alice in Wonderland character to win prizes.

Mobile Phones in School

Children should not bring mobile phones into school on a daily basis. The only exception is if the child is not going straight home from school at the end of the day. In these circumstances, the mobile phone should be handed into reception before school starts in the morning.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR FSU

Please ensure you sign up to a parent meeting if you have a reception aged child or your child started in January.

JUMBLE SALE Saturday 10th March 2.00 to 3.30 pm

We are holding a Jumble Sale in the school hall on Saturday 10th March from 2.00 to 3.30pm and we need your donations of Clothes, Toys, Books & Bric A Brac to sell.
Storage space at school is limited but items may be left in the school reception area from Monday 5th March or preferably brought straight to the hall on Friday 9th March from 3.00 pm.

We always need help with setting up, selling and tidying up afterwards, so if you could spare any time on Friday or Saturday afternoon we would be very grateful. Please complete the slip below and return it to the office ASAP.

Along with our usual selection of quality clothing, bric a brac, terrific toys, cuddlies and books for both adults & children make sure you check out our large selection of “New To You” earrings.
Entrance to the Jumble Sale will be 20p per adult and refreshments will be on sale.

World Book Day Thursday 1st March

On Tuesday every child received a World Book Day £1 Book Voucher attached to the Scholastic Book Club leaflet.
You can use it with this leaflet and help us to get free books for our library, please return your order to school by Thursday 8th March. Alternatively visit participating retailers and swap it for one of the free World Book Day Books, there are eight to choose from, or get £1 off any book costing £2.99 or more.

Friday March 9th is a very special day for our school and your child, as we are holding our first ever Story Book Day.

Story Book Day places a new spotlight on stories, reading and literacy through focusing on making a real difference for others. As well as changing the lives of children in Africa it also gets your child reading books.

We are asking our pupils to:

• Choose just one or two of their favourite story books from home which they can to send to a child in an African school

• Bring their books to school on Story Book Day

• Also bring 50 pence with each title [we’ll tell you why in a minute!]

We would like pupils to write a personal message on a label inside the front cover of each book to tell the book’s next readers why they liked it. 
Each message will begin, “I hope you like this book because….” we would be delighted if you helped your child write a message for their book. 
Our pupils’ books will be delivered to an African school by the charity ‘Jole Rider’, working in partnership with our school and the ‘Exmouth Raleigh Rotary Club’. Members of the club came to an assembly at school to tell us all about the project and, on March 9th, they will return. 
Story Book Day is a way for our pupils to make a real difference to African schools.

The 50 pence helps to pay for:

• delivering the books to an African school [it’s a long, long way!]

• creating a library in the African school

• providing shelving and cupboards, where the books are stored and displayed

• a librarian, to keep the library open for the children to use

Our Story Book Day supports jole rider’s Books4Africa programme.
